World number one Justin Rose is a shot behind leader Jon Rahm after the first round of Farmers Insurance Open.
The Englishman, like Rahm from Spain, left the North Course at Torrey Pines and scored a nine-in-a-row 63 after having taken his first hole.
"I am very happy with it", said Rose, who will play the South Course on Friday. "I really felt at ease and gave myself plenty of opportunities."
Three times champion Jordan Spieth is also in the seventh underwar.
"To shoot nine and take advantage was really important," added Rose to Sky Sports.
"The design of the South Course is fantastic and the modification to the north is fun, and if you enjoy being somewhere, this is normally shown in your game."
Tiger Woods, who won the last of his 14 majors at Torrey Pines in 2008 and has collected 10% of his 80 PGA Tour titles at the venue, on his way to the historically more difficult South Course.
The former number one in the world, whose US Open triumph was part of an unbeaten run of four years on the California course, started his day with a bogey but recovered for a two-under par 70 with a birdie last.
The Northern Irish Rory McIlroy also plays the North Race on Friday To improve his opening round
McIlroy made his second little bird of the day on the par-fifth 18th to recover from a bogey two holes earlier.
