. Leading professional golfers outside the United States must be quarantined in America before resuming the PGA Tour season next month.

This was confirmed when the PGA Tour set out its plans for a return to action.

The track has not been played since the Players Championship ended on March 12.

About 25 players eligible for the Charles Schwab Colonial event in Texas currently live outside the US.

Those players are Tommy Fleetwood, Francesco Molinari and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

They must comply with US rules that require 14 days of quarantine upon arrival in the country.

"That's in place right now," said PGA Tour administrator Andy Levinson. "It is likely to continue, so it is imperative that voters who must return to the United States do so at least two weeks before our return to competition."

Fleetwood has already indicated that he is unlikely to leave his family on the other side of the Atlantic all summer.

Fitzpatrick is currently awaiting a travel waiver to enable him to travel to the United States. But the 25-year-old from Sheffield, a five-time European Tour winner, faces complications regarding his regular caddy Billy Foster, who is likely to miss the first three tournaments if the PGA Tour season resumes.

With family back home in England, Foster may have had coronavirus quarantine for two weeks on either side of every trip he makes to America.

The PGA Tour is increasingly confident that the season will resume behind closed doors. at the Colonial Event in Fort Worth, Texas on June 11.

"We have prepared what we believe to be a very comprehensive health and safety plan," said Operations Chief Tyler Dennis.

"But just to be clear, we're not going to play if we can't do it in a safe and healthy environment."

Players will be tested on Covid -19 during tournament weeks. The process begins with questions about their health status and their temperature will be taken upon arrival at the tournament site.

"By combining a thermal measurement with a questionnaire, you have a very good chance of identifying a high percentage of people at risk," Levinson said during a conference call in which he explained the plans. of the tour.

"And then for a population of the people we will have on site, we will implement Covid-19 assays using the RT-PCR nasal smear test, the most effective gold standard for diagnosing Covid -19.

"Potentially on the road as testing progresses, we may be able to continue with a saliva-based test collection."

There will be special charter planes to transport golfers. and caddies between events and they are advised to stay in approved hotels.

Anyone who tests positive in a tournament will be removed from the event and if this happens after they make the cut they will get last place

We hope the PGA Tour will have a full schedule play as soon as it resumes and at least the first four events will be played without spectators.

The first major for men is scheduled for the US PGA Championship, which starts on August 6, after being the original date this week.

But there are fears that it will have to be removed from San Francisco's Harding Park because of strict California lock regulations.

"Ultimately, it will depend on what the city, county, and state allow us to do and not do," admitted PGA of Kerry Haigh, chief of the US championships. "The safety of everyone is our top priority."

His organization has considered options to play without spectators. It is also rumored that the August Championship may be switched to PGA Tour headquarters in Sawgrass, Florida.
