Tom McKibbin competed against home club member Jed Morgan in Sunday's final in Royal Queensland
Holywood teenager Tom McKibbin & hopes of winning the Australian amateur title was defeated when defeated 5 & 3 in the final by Jed Morgan.
Morgan, the host's Royal Queensland club, rushed into a six-after-12 lead in the 36-hole decision maker.
McKibbin, 17, cut the margin back to four after 18 holes and after six drops again, reduced to three holes with seven remaining.
But Morgan won the 12th and 15th to complete his victory.
McKibbin paid tribute to Morgan after the final.
"I did not win today, but I am still happy to have reached the final. Congratulations to Jed who played great," said the Northern Irishman on Twitter.
The performance of McKibbin in Australia has made him up to 78th in the world amateur rankings and he is 13 places higher than h is Irish teammate James Sugrue who last won the British amateur championship for the last time.
The teenager plays in the same Holywood club where four-time big winner Rory McIlroy learned the game.
The final Sunday of Sunday McKibbin misses the second consecutive Irish winner after the victory of Conor Purcell last January.
