Max Homa defeats Tony Finau in playoff to win Genesis Invitational at Riviera

American Max Homa won his second PGA Tour title by beating Tony Finau in a playoff in the Genesis Invitational.

The 30-year-old No. 91 in the world missed a three-foot putt on the 72nd hole that would have sealed the title, but won on the second extra hole with a par.

Finau, looking for a first PGA Tour win since 2016, had rivaled him at 12th below after a final 64 on the legendary Riviera.

Another American, unannounced Sam Burns, who led the back nine on Sunday from day one, was third on 11 under.

World Number 149 Burns, five shots ahead mid-stage, had to complete five holes Sunday morning after Saturday's delays due to high winds.

He carded a 74 and led through two to the last 18 holes and was still two ahead of the turn before three dropped shots in four holes at the 24-year-old while 69 shot to finish third, two ahead of Australian Cameron Smith.

Under a cloudless sky on Riviera, the world's number one was Dustin Johnson and Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick in the final group with Burns, but none of the trio made any progress.

Fitzpatrick finished with a modest 71, finishing fifth out of seven with fellow Europeans Jon Rahm (66) from Spain and Norwegian Viktor Hovland (67) while Johnson (72) ) a further shot back alongside resurgent Italian Francesco Molinari, the former Open champion.
