But he only shot a two-under-round of 70 on the final day, while fellow countryman Berger rounded 65 and finished 18 under for his fourth PGA Tour title.

The 27-year-old won with two shots from fellow countryman Maverick McNealy, while Paul Casey of England took fifth place.

Casey finished the tournament at 14 under, one shot behind Spieth and American Patrick Cantlay. Scotland's Russell Knox tied for sixth in 13th bottom after a final round of 70.

& # 39; I'll out-work anybody & # 39;

Berger has now won four times on the PGA Tour

Berger appeared to have an intense fight with fellow countryman Nate Lashley, but his rival needed four putts from 12 feet on the 16th to finish the hole with a seven and destroy his hopes for a second Tour win.

But Berger ended in style. It looked like a birdie on the last hole was likely to get him the win, but after a long second in the green, he flipped over a 30-foot eagle putt and slammed into the air as he watched the California sky.

] & # 39; It's hard to describe, & # 39; Berger said. “I knew it would be a clean finish and I went forward with a great drive and possibly the best three woods I've ever hit in my life.

" The putt was the icing on the cake. It was a great feeling when it went in. It's so hard to win here. I feel like everything has to come together to win.

"I've been trying to get better at every aspect of my game and I feel like I've achieved that. The most talented guy here and don't beat him the farthest, but I outsmart everyone, so that's my greatest weapon. "

Spieth, who has lost form since winning his third major title at the 2017 Open, at least take comfort in his second top-five finish in as many weeks.

The 27-year-old finished fourth at the Phoenix Open last week, his first top-20 finish since the Memorial Tournament last July.

Spieth finished 2017 at number two in the world, but started 2021 in 82nd place.
