Olivia Mehaffey has broken a bone in her hand while walking and will not be able to fight for a spell.

The Northern Irish golfer revealed that she sustained the injury after falling while walking with her family.

"Fortunately, it's not so bad, so I shouldn't go out for long, but I'll have to withdraw from my next few events," she explained on Twitter.

Mehaffey was due to participate in the Women's & # 39; s Amateur Championship next week in Royal County Down, where she is a member.

The news about the 21-year-old's injury came just hours after being named in this month's Vagliano Trophy in the UK and Ireland team to play against the European mainland.

The match is being played at Royal St George & # 39; s from June 28-29 and Mehaffey & # 39; s participation in the event can now be doubted due to her hand injury.

Mehaffey, the highest ranked player in the team, is one of the six players currently selected, with two extra players to be added later.

She has currently won three victories at the collegiate circuit in the US at a scholarship at Arizona State University; the Bruin Wave Invitational, the Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Norman Regional.

Alice Hewson, Lily May Humphreys, Julie McCarthy, Shannon McWilliam and Isobel Wardle were also selected for the Vagliano Trophy alongside the Northern Irish woman

The quartet will be accompanied by two more players after the Women & # 39; s Amateur Championship.

"We have selected a great group of players who have played a great golf this season and it will be an exciting game against the European continent in Kent," said Elaine Ratcliffe, GB & I captain.

"We will keep a close eye on the events during the Women & # 39; s Amateur Championship next week to determine the two players who will complete our team and it will be an extra incentive for those players from Great Britain and Ireland participating in Royal County Down. "

The Junior Vagliano Trophy competition will be played simultaneously with the senior event at which GB & I wants to win the trophy for the first time since the international girls competition was inaugurated in 2011.

Maria Dunne will be on the sidelines for the first time and the former GB & I international has selected Beth Coulter, Hannah Darling, Carmen Griffiths, Darcey Harry, Patience Rhodes and Ffion Tynan to play against their counterparts from The Continent of Europe.
