SuperSpeed Golf has become one of the most popular golf training aids in recent years. I tested it when it first came out and have since used it to generate more speed in my swing. Many site readers have become interested in their Overspeed Training system and want to know more about their training methods.
SuperSpeed has recently added a number of new protocols to its training library. This allows golfers to continue training for almost two years. There is a lot of research behind the exercises and I will highlight a few details behind their core exercises.
Drill 1: Step-Change
The step-by-step exercise is one of the fundamental exercises to develop more speed with SuperSpeed clubs. I have done it many times in their level 1 training protocols.
Here is a video that shows how it works:
The benefits of step change are:
Helps transfer pressure to the leading side of the golfer before the backswing ends, which is a common tendency observed with faster golfers
First rotates the hips, followed by the torso, the front arm and then the club. This represents a very efficient kinematic series that is observed by more experienced (and faster) golfers
Common trends are:
The most common mistake for players is getting out too late. When players get out too late, the upper body tends to take over, and it can hardly produce as much speed as it would if you were working with the hips and lower body. Cueing to get out earlier, even before you complete the backswing, is a great way to time the exit movement properly.
Another mistake is that golfers get out too far. Become too wide with your position width, and your hips cannot rotate properly, which causes speed limitations. Be aware of how far you get out and reduce the distance if it is beyond the standard width of your standard.
Drill 2: Kneeling
The kneeling exercise is one of the new exercises in the SuperSpeed library. You start with your knees right under your hips, push the club a little forward and then wave back and forth aggressively.
It is important to note that your swing speed will be around 20% less than standing swings.
The advantages of the kneeling drill are:
Only rely on the upper body to produce speed. By eradicating the soil component, you learn to increase the rotation speed of your torso.
It improves rotation sequencing and wrist mechanics (two of the three core components of speed)
Helps players who are too dependent on the ground and do not have the correct order of the upper body
Common trends:
Some players have their knees too wide apart. This stabilizes the hips and prevents them from turning as they should. As a result, it can put too much strain on adjacent joints and the lower back. Make sure your knees are hip-width apart and keep adjusting them throughout the entire protocol.
Shows the correct knee width
A common question is how to adjust the knee exercise for older golfers or for those who may feel pain or discomfort. Instead, you can place your feet together using the following exercise:
Because the knee exercise is a more advanced protocol, golfers must also wait until they have completed the first training before doing this exercise.
Drill 3: Heel-Stomp
The heel stump drill has become popular in the past year, especially on professional tours. It is part of the training at level 4
The Heel-Stomp is part of the level 4 protocol together with the double step exercise (you can find more information about this exercise on the SuperSpeed site)
You start in a normal golf position, then push the club a little forward, swing the club back and lift the front heel, start your downswing and stomp into the ground with the front heel and then wave aggressively. Here is a video of the whole-stump drill:
The benefits include:
Increased vertical force in the front of the body
Helps hips to be the first to start the downswing series (another trend for speed players)
Increases the rotation of the backswing
Common trends:
Many golfers stomp too late, indicating that the hips have not turned enough
Two years of training available
If you want to know more about all SuperSpeed training protocols, you can view this page. For golfers who seriously want to increase their swing speed and are willing to put in the work, I believe this is the best system available. There are many other products on the market, but many of them are pretty gimmicky and don't work. So beware of many claims!
