England's Georgia Hall is two shots from the clubhouse leader after a two-over 73 in the first round of the Women's Open at Royal Troon on Thursday.

The 24-year-old, who won the 2018 event, would have been closer to Canadian Alena Sharp's par, but for a dropshot on the 18th.

Elsewhere England's Charley Hull is out of control except five after a round with a double bogey seven.

The German Caroline Masson and the American Nelly Korda are at home at one over par.

Dame Laura Davies, who opens the tee to mark her 40th appearance in the event, birded three of the last six holes, but still only managed to return a nine-over 80.

Hall, who was three times above standard after five holes in gusty winds on the Ayrshire coast, believes her careful approach paid off.

"I could barely get up on some holes. The wind was blowing so hard all the time, but especially at the start," Hall told Sky Sports. "I'm pretty happy with how I

"I played pretty conservatively with my approach,

" I have to go on and grind because you never know what's going to happen . "
