Brooks Koepka becomes number one in the world for the first time after winning the CJ Cup in South Korea.

Koepka, which the PGA Tour's player of the year earlier this month, scored an eight-under-par 64 on Sunday to finish at 21 below, four shots free from compatriot Gary Woodland.

The 28-year-old replaces his Ryder Cup-teammate Dustin Johnson at the top of the rankings on Monday.

"To be number one in the world is something I dreamed about as a child," said Koepka.

"I do not think you will sink in.

" Everything I did this year has worked, so I do not want to change anything – just keep improving.

"I am so excited, you have no idea, I can not wait to play again."

Three times great champion Koepka, who won the US Open and US PGA Championship earlier this year, is the third player in 2018 to become number one for the first time, after the English Justin Rose and fellow American Justin Thomas.

His last round in South Korea included chipping for a birdie of the greenside rough at the par-four 16th.

Koepka & # 39; s victory follows the Ryder Cup, where he & # 39; deeply grieved & # 39; was left behind that one of his tee-shots resulted in a spectator who lost sight in her right eye.

He also denied that he had been quarreled with teammate Johnson after the event, which won Europe, although captain Jim Furyk later said that she had a brief exchange of words.
