Rory McIlroy left sixteen shots at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai after a faultless 77 in the second round of Friday.
29-year-old reached the turn in 35 after three birdies and two bogeys.
But he bogeyed his 10th, the first, triple bogeyed the next after finding water twice and double-bogey 16.
Tony Finau's 67 left the American three for the English duo Tommy Fleetwood (68) and Justin Rose (67) plus a nightly leader Patrick Reed (72).
McIlroy's problems at eleven, the second, came after he had ridden a perfect ride that left him only a short stroke in the par five.
However, the second shot of the second world match flew over the green into a water hazard and after he had misplaced his chip, his ball dripped again in the same danger.
The former number one in the world is in a share of 58 in the 77-man event headin g in the last two days of the no-cut tournament.
McIlroy has not won since he claimed the Arnold Palmer Invitational – which was his first win since 2016 – in the United States in March.
He finished second at the Open Championship in July and claimed top 10 finishes at the last two playoff events in the US before helping Europe regain the Ryder Cup in France.
