Tony Finau takes a three-prong lead on the final day of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai after Justin Rose failed by the end of the third round.
Englishman Rose had a one-shot advantage after nine holes, but left three shots at 17 and 18 for a two-under-par 70 to sit three of the lead.
He is next to the American duo Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele at 10 below.
Finau, who was one of the few stars for the United States in the Ryder Cup, finished his two-under-lap with three birdies.
By contrast, Rose, who could reach the top of the world rankings with Americans Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson, found the bunker at 17 for a double bogey and the water at 18 for a bogey.
Reigning Race to the champion of Dubai Tommy Fleetwood is five shots alongside the American Andrew Putnam.
The Englishman Fleetwood was one after the leader after the birdies of the third, fourth and tenth place and dropped a shot on the fifth. But he threefold bogey the 14th after finding the water before he took a shot at the last one.
The problems of Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy continued with a 75 and the quadruple big champion is tied for the 60th in the eighth place, while Koepka is one and Johnson is four.
"I have a field of world class behind me," said Finau, who is looking for his first victory in the European Tour. "This is the position you want to be in and I will close my first tournament in this position, which is exciting for me.
" I did not have much that got my way for the first half of the day and Rosey made his run.
"I was just very happy that I was able to finish that road and get some speed tomorrow."
