I saw Birddogs for the first time when they premiered on Shark Tank in 2018. They asked for 250k for no less than 1.5% of the shares in their young company. Everything for gym shorts with a built-in underwear lining. "We combine the feeling of nudity with the function of a hip bag."
They didn't get a deal that day, but many people like me noticed. Their marketing strategy is a bit ridiculous and in your face, but in a digital world dominated by startup clothing brands, you have to find a way to stand out.
Their distinctive gym shorts promise a comfortable, underwear-free experience combined with a versatile style. They have many designs, ranging from basic colors to outrageous.
A few of their more exotic designs
Unfortunately, these are only shorts. If any of you regularly go on Facebook or Instagram, you are likely to be the target of a number of direct-to-consumer companies. They all claim to reinvent things such as socks, t-shirts and all other essential items. Often their products do not meet their claims.
After wearing Birddogs for a few weeks, I am impressed by their product. You can wear them when you sit around the house, train and even on the golf course.
My Impressions of Birddogs
Shorts are essential to me. Over the years I have built up a stock for every situation – sports, lounging, playing golf and for casual trips. In recent years I have refined various companies that do an excellent job in making crossover shorts. For example, I wear Linksoul & # 39; s Boardwalkers on the golf course or even eat out.
Although I liked the idea of the versatility of Birddogs, I was a bit skeptical because of one thing – I am not a fan of built-in liners. Comfort and support is very important to me, and I have noticed that most padded shorts that I have bought in the past are doing poorly. I usually cut out linings and just wear my normal underwear. I own a set of 2 UNDR boxer shorts. In my opinion, they are some of the best underwear available, so I am very reluctant to dump them for anything else.
For several weeks I wore three pairs of Birddogs almost everywhere – even swimming. I chose some of their more traditional colors so that they could work for different activities. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, and in fact I would say that I am now a convert.
Casual with a t-shirt
My most important hangup before I tried them was the liners. However, they changed their mind quickly. They are very comfortable and offer a lot of support. You feel a lot of freedom there at the same time; it's almost like you're not wearing anything because the material is so light. So whether I wore them at home or played golf, I began to enjoy that feeling.
A view of the linings
I think the strongest feature of Birddogs is the versatility of the design. Interestingly enough, I received a lot of unsolicited feedback. Because I went with more neutral colors, people assumed that they were different types of shorts, depending on how I was dressed. For example, I showed a haircut with a T-shirt and sandals, and my stylist asked me if I had come from the beach. When I was wearing them with a golf polo and belt, my game partners had no idea that they were technically a gym shorts.
Would you know that these were gym shorts?
They did not give away the kaki and navy color. Although not all of their shorts can, many of their colors have "chameleon" capabilities. There are also three inside leg lengths to choose from – I went with their longest option of 9 1/4 ″ which kept them at a distance from my knees that made me feel comfortable (not a fan of short shorts).
I found the material very soft and comfortable. You can sweat in it while exercising or playing golf on a warm day. You can also take a dip in the pool (although it took a long time to dry up). It also doesn't seem to be cheap, because it lasted nicely in several washes.
Finally, Birddogs also built some subtle functionality that I liked. One thing that has always bothered me about wearing shorts is the weight of my phone, keys and wallet. I keep them all in my front pockets. There are two zippered pockets in the Birddog gym shorts, with which you can keep those items closer to your hips.
It was nice not to let my phone weigh on my front pocket
Instead of weighting the front of the shorts, it was nice that the weight was evenly distributed on my sides. Another small feature that caught my attention is that the drawstring has better adjusted the tightness around my hips than other shorts I have had. I discovered that the more weight I put in the shorts, the tighter I needed the thong.
Birddogs may miss the seriousness of their branding, but they have built excellent shorts that you can wear to play golf or many other activities.
The Pants
Birddogs recently branched into pants. They have many of the same features as their shorts with the built-in liners and extra pockets – their goal is to give it a chino look, but with more comfort.
For a long time, men had resigned themselves to dull, uncomfortable pants that never fitted just right. Now it seems that 50+ companies want to solve this problem with high-quality work clothes. In recent years I have been more attracted to these designs because I really hate traditional work trousers. I have a pair of Rhone Commuter pants that I have worn both on the golf course and even with more conventional work clothes.
My wife said my ass looked good, you're the judge
My favorite part of the Birddogs pants is the cut. I have trouble finding golf pants that are not too baggy or too tight – there is a happy medium here. They sit comfortably around the waist because elastic is built in. The most important thing is that they are finished in the right places. I don't like tight pants because they are uncomfortable. Bird dogs give you a little more space around your thighs and taper around your lower legs. So if you want a more modern look, but don't want your lower half strangled, I think you'll enjoy it.
If you wear them at work or on the golf course, no one would ever think that they were meant for both situations because of the material and the design. If you are in the office and struggle with comfort, they solve that problem nicely.
Wrapping It
In general, I give the shorts and pants of the Birddogs a big thumbs up. They are comfortable, versatile and functional. Despite my concerns about the built-in lining, I dig them.
The shorts range from $ 54.95 – $ 59.95 and the pants are $ 89.95. They are not cheap, but also not insanely expensive like some of the other premium direct-to-consumer brands. Because you can wear them in so many different scenarios, I think they can simplify your closet. For golfers I think they add an extra value.
Birddogs offers free shipping and returns, so you can try them without risk. One thing I noticed is that some of their styles are sold out, something I've seen from many growing clothing brands. I would like to get some other colors from their pants, but many of the sizes and colors that I want are ordered afterwards – something to keep in mind.
