Matthew Fitzpatrick from England missed his first European Tour victory of the season when he lost a play-off against Andrea Pavan in the BMW International Open.

Pavan & # 39; s amazing final round of six-under saw him invent eight places to finish with Fitzpatrick at 15 under par.

The pair played two play-off holes, with Pavin making a birdie on the second to triumph in Munich.

The victory was the second European Tour title in Italy.

"I was in a play-off in the qualification for the US Open with five boys for one place and I grabbed the first three and then you go home with nothing," said Pavan.

"At least here is the worst that you finish in second, but it's very satisfying to win – it's so hard, so hard."

The duo finished two shots further down from a seven-member group including & # 39; overnight leader & # 39; Jordan Smith and defending champion Matt Wallace.

Fitzpatrick enjoyed a huge windfall at the first play-off hole when his approach from 285 yards came to a halt just centimeters from a water hazard, but a bad throw meant that he was only Pavan & # 39; s par could match

The players returned to the par-five 18th and after Pavan hit a sublime third shot from the rough to the walk-in range, Fitzpatrick mishit his bunker shot and couldn't make a long birdie attempt.
