The English Sam Horsfield shot a 61 with three eagles to battle himself towards the last day from the British Masters.
The 23-year-old improved to 12 under par, four behind Italian leader Renato Paratore, who has yet to drop a shot.
Justin Harding from South Africa is one back at 15 below, followed by the Danish teenager Rasmus Hojgaard and the English Dale Whitnell in Close House. Friday 72.
Westwood – a course participant in North East England, who also hosted the event in 2017 – just made the cut on Thursday but did not improve in the third round.

Compatriot Ashley Chesters is also four strokes ahead after a round of 68 on Friday.
Whitnell, the 31-year-old former courier driver from Colchester, followed the English pair with successive birdies to move up to 13 moving away.
Paratore retained his one-shot lead overnight with another bogey-free round, meaning he didn't drop a shot through 54 holes.

Harding, 34 and 19 year old Hojgaard are both on the hunt for a second European Tour title.
