Brooks Koepka stopped Dustin Johnson's threat to defend his US PGA Championship and win a fourth major on a dramatic way day at Bethpage Black.

The US Open champion of 2017 and 2018 had a seven-shot lead at the start of the final round, which dropped to one after four consecutive bogeys from the 11th.

But world number one capitulated on the last three holes while Koepka won with two shots on eight under.

Matt Wallace from England closed the third and earned his best end with a major.

The 29 a year old from Hillingdon scored a two-over 72 to finish at two under, alongside Americans Jordan Spieth (71) and Patrick Cantley (71).

The top six were the only golfers to finish the tournament under par on a brutal Long Island course that was made even more difficult on the last day as the wi and increased.

Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry from Ireland were among the final victories, finishing eighth to one after both ended with 69s.
