Caddy Dave McNeilly, veteran from Northern Ireland, described his split with English golfer Matt Wallace as "part of the game".

Wallace earned four Europeans Tour wins after joining McNeilly in early 2017, but divorced the company together with the 67-year-old earlier this month.

Wallace TV images showed McNeilly several times this year, but the Antrim man refused to criticize the Englishman on Monday.

"I'm not saying, & poor old me. I'm scapegoat," McNeilly told BBC Sport Northern Ireland.

"You have to take responsibility for your part in it.

" The reason why I enjoyed working for Matt Wallace was because of that fire. It is the dream of a caddy to have a player who gives you everything. "

Wallace, 26th in the world, was criticized for social media for his treatment of McNeilly during the final round of the BMW International Open in Munich in June.

McNeilly, whose long caddy career stints with Sir Nick Faldo, Nick Price and Padraig Harrington, however, said there was an error on both sides in his relationship with the fiery Wallace.

"This is not just about Matt Wallace. I must be able to learn for him and to adapt and give caddy, "said the Greenisland man

" I must be able to learn the right words to say to him who Flames will not burn and keep giving him messages that keep him focused.

"And perhaps an area where I was not so good that I had set no limits on Matt and said: & # 39; no … that you are not crossing a line in the sand & # 39 ; [in terms of losing his temper]. I was more focused on trying to make it work. "

Wallace & # 39; s last tournament with McNeilly was the World Golf Championship event in Memphis late last month with the farewell of the ways four days later in a phone call.

"He was a little sorry that he had to do it," added McNeilly, who became healthy again after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014.

"There was no (stated) reason, but if there was a reason it had been more like it, he didn't like the way he behaved towards me on the golf course.

"He was not willing to continue. The sad part was that I was willing to persevere and I actually thought that we were starting to get there, to get over that hurdle, where we started working well together. "

McNeilly is now waiting for vacancies to come his way but given his pedigree, it is unlikely that he will have to wait too long.

As was his custom, McNeilly was on the beach at Galgorm Castle in Monday Northern Ireland and he advised young players to inaugural World Invitational of a week with professional events for both men and women
