Europe captain Harrington opts for three Ryder Cup wild card picks

Harrington was named European Ryder Cup Captain in January

European Captain Padraig Harrington chooses three wildcards instead of four when his team defends the Ryder Cup during Whistling Straights next year.

Nine players automatically qualify with earned points in tournaments of the BMW PGA Championship in September to the same event in 2020.

"In my experience, a player is more comfortable when he has automatically qualified, "Harrington said.

Europe beat the United States 17½-10½ to regain the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Thomas Bjorn, 2018 captain, used his wildcards to give experienced players Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and bring Henrik Stenson into the team.

Spaniard Garcia became the leading scorer of the Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in France, while Poulter defeated world number one Dustin Johnson to help Europe win back the trophy.

Harrington's decision makes sense because players selected as wildcards often carry an additional burden compared to those who fully qualify .

More often than not, the golfer who ends up on the spot just outside the qualifying places still gets a wildcard, so why not encourage them with the confidence that comes with automatic qualification?

serves as an additional incentive for American Europeans to play more on their home circuit to strengthen their qualifying opportunities.
