Lorenzo-Vera leads Tour Championship after the first round

Rory McIlroy finished day one of the World Tour Championship in second place behind leader Mike Lorenzo-Vera.

The Northern Irishman played an eight-under 64, a blow behind the Frenchman who shot the lowest opening round ever in the championship.

Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who is second in the classification of Race to Dubai, is connected with fellow countryman Tom Lewis in the fourth out of five.

Fleetwood hit a hole-out eagle at the opening hole in Dubai.

The 28-year-old described his unlikely eagle two as the "perfect start" to the day.

"I had a great ride and I didn't expect the nine to reach the pin, but it was the perfect start," Fleetwood told Sky Sports.

"I made so many good putts today.

" I got a really nice line where I hit a few sweethearts and I couldn't have asked much more. "

Fleetwood, who last week won the Race to Dubai with the victory over the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa, is crowned as the best European golfer as current leader Bernd Wiesberger finishes outside the top two

The Austrian is currently in 14th place in second under c arding a 70.

Meanwhile, McIlroy declared his eagle on the 18th as his "best shot of the year".
