The Australian Marc Leishman placed a seven-under 65 to win his fifth PGA Tour title with a one-off victory in the Farmers Insurance Open over Torrey Pines.
The 36-year-old world number 28 was & # 39; four in the night back but saved eight birds to end up at 15 below.
Leader Jon Rahm saw four shots go into his first five holes and despite a good recovery to card a 70, he was one back.
Rory McIlroy started three behind and had a mixed 69 to become third at 12 under, while Tiger Woods was nine under.
Rahm had a one-shot lead in the last day but made a miserable start, a double bogey rising to the par three-thirds after his tee-shot ended briefly in a canyon.
The Spaniard had an eagle and three little birds from the 13th, but Leishman & # 39; s closing bird left Rahm and needed an eagle with the latter to force a playoff in California.
A nice fairway forest found the back of the green and left a similar line on the left as its 60-foot putt from the grass for an eagle to win the tournament three years ago.
This time, however, the putt ended centimeters shortly when Leishman celebrated the victory on Australia Day, the victory of countryman Lucas Herbert at the Dubai Desert Classic of the European Tour.
McIlroy, needing a win to return to the top of the world rankings, dropped three shots in his first four holes, but recovered with three birdies and an eagle in his next five, before taking two bogeys and mixed three birdies on the back nine.
Woods was in the lead five at the start of the final round in his quest to become the outright winner of the PGA Tour.
His round of 70 contained an extraordinary moment at the second hole, when his second shot bounced from the fairway at par four onto the green and into the bottom of the cup, only to roll back.
The 15-fold winner was told by caddy Joe la Cava who came from the 18th green after the death of his friend Kobe Bryant, the legendary basketball player killed in a helicopter crash over the state in Calabasas.
