Paul Waring of England is another shot back and three of them to go with one more round.
"I went through a mini-storm at the start and then the round started and I held some good putts," said world number two McIlroy.
"I remained patient and birdied the holes that I needed."
He added: "I rode the ball as well today as I have all week, it was a gradual lap and I tried to keep giving myself chances.
" If I had a 67 or so in the final round, I think I am hard to beat. "
" Unfortunately, Rory plays very well – he plays very annoyingly, "said Fitzpatrick.
" I have to play well tomorrow and that is why it is a World Golf Championships. It has the best players in the world. "
Waring, 34, is higher in the rankings after shooting 65 and 66 in the second and third rounds respectively, after a one-over-par 73 opening round.
Home favorite Li Haotong started the third round well with five birdies in the first six holes, but his challenge on the Sheshan International course dropped nine in the back when he shot a two-over 74 and nine shots back.
