Miguel Angel Jimenez videotaped to Sam Torrance after making his 707th European Tour performance

Miguel Angel Jimenez made history by surpassing Sam Torrance's record for most European Tour appearances, as the Spaniard brought his total to 707 in the opening round of Hero Open on Thursday.

The 56-year-old, who made his Tour debut in 1983, marked the milestone with an impressive eight under 64 in the Forest of Arden.

Jimenez ranks second alongside fellow countryman Pablo Larrazabal.

The pair are two two shots from the lead detained Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez.

Jimenez, who attended the 2014 Spanish Open at the became the oldest winner of European Tour history, was acclaimed by many of his fellow players on the 18th green.

Jack Nicklaus, Rory McIlroy and world number one Jon Rahm were among those who paid tribute during the tournament's television coverage.

"It was a beautiful day," said Jimenez.

] "Eight below average with a nice summer day and especially on the 18th with all my colleagues clapping for me, it is emotional."
