Xander Schauffele scored a course record of 11-under-par 62 in the last round and won the Sentry-tournament of champions in Hawaii at 23 under.
American started the day with five shots behind leader Gary Woodland, but finished one free from his compatriot.
Schauffele even opened his round with a bogey but two eagles and eight birdies helped him to victory.
Northern Ireland Rory McIlroy began in second place, three shots behind Woodland, but fell away with a 72.
The 29-year-old left him 15 in general, equal for fourth place next to last year's champion, Dustin Johnson and Marc Leishman.
"I clearly could have scored better, but I did what I wanted to do, gave myself plenty of chances, could not just drop the ball," McIlroy said.
But he added: "I do not think anyone could have lived with Xander today."
McIlroy debuted during the event, with 33 PGA Tour winners from the previous calendar year.
Justin Thomas hit nine birdies in his final round to finish in third place, four shots behind Woodland.
English couple Paul Casey and Ian Poulter both went around in 71 and left them respectively at the 16th and 18th place.
Schauffele is only the fifth player to score 62 at the Kapalua Plantation Course on Maui.
