Shane Lowry ended in a tie for the 34th at last year's Irish Open in Lahinch

Open champion Shane Lowry will make his first appearance on his own soil since claiming his first major title when he competes at the Irish Open this year.

The County Offaly man, who won the Open Championship at Royal Portrush last July, has confirmed his entry for the May tournament at Mount Juliet.

"I can't wait to set it up for my home crowd," Lowry said.

"It is always an honor to play for the Irish fans and they have always supported me so much."

World number 16 added: "She played such a huge role in my win at Portrush, so it's a great time to become Open champion at the Irish Open. "

Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009 and he will be one of the favorites to win over secure the Kilkenny course.

The event is organized by Graeme McDowell, who won the Saudi International at the weekend.
