American Justin Thomas claimed the BMW championship by three shots in Medinah.
Overnight leader Thomas, who set a new course record with a third round 61, closed with a 68 to finish 25 below.
Fellow American Patrick Cantlay was his closest rival to 22 while Japan & Hideki Matsuyama shot his second 63 of the week to finish two further back.
Tiger Woods finished in seven underneath and will not defend his title during next season's Tour Championship after missing the 30-man field.
Only the top 30 on the FedEx Cup point list of the PGA Tour is eligible to play on East Lake in Atlanta.
To qualify, Woods – who struggled with injury and form since claiming his 15th major with the Masters in April – had to finish eleventh or higher at Medinah, but ended 37th after a close. 72.
"Last year culminated in a pretty special moment, and it would have been nice to go back there," Woods said. "But I'll watch the boys on TV."
Thomas now leads the points classification after a 10th PGA Tour victory that was achieved thanks to four birdies on the back nine.
England Tommy Fleetwood was tied up on the 13th on 13 under with Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland two shots further back.
Earlier in the day, five-time big winner Phil Mickelson almost missed his start time after the lightning hit the roof of his hotel.
The American was evacuated from his hotel, but managed to get his clubs out of his room in time and eventually card a 71 who let him down to five.
"Kind of a funny deal," he said after his round. "There were 10 fire trucks. I got into my car and couldn't go back. The roads were closed and the hotel was closed.
" But things disappeared fairly quickly. I could come in again and get my things. It all worked out well – except for my score. "
