Schotlands Michele Thomson is five shots from the lead in joint five after round one of the Women's New South Wales Open, near Canberra.

The Aberdonian's three-under 68 leaves her lagging Icelandic Valdis Thora Jonsdottir, who scored a career-best 63 despite playing with a bad back.

Astrid Vayson de Pradenne of France is in second place, three behind Jonsdottir.

Felicity Johnson of England and the Carly Booth in Scotland are equal to one-seventh or two below a five-way.

Defending champion Meghan MacLaren took a shot after a 70.

"My back has hurt a lot during the last five weeks, so I decided this week that I would try to swing it rather slowly "said Jonsdottir, who hardly could have been in bed last week.

"I kept the ball in play, I made a lot of good iron photos in the greens and made many good putts."
