Van Dam wins in Canberra strengthens position Solheim Cup

Anne van Dam strengthened her position at the top of the European Solheim Cup qualifying ranking with victory over the Canberra Women's Classic.

The Dutch, 23, was jointly leader overnight and scored a final-round six-under par 65 to finish 17 under.

She won with three shots from Slovenian Katja Pogacar and claimed a third Ladies European Tour title in six months.

Europe faces the US in the 16th staging of the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland from 13-15 September.

The team with 12 women will be completed on Monday, August 11, after the last qualifying tournament, the Scottish Open.

The top three in European qualifying mode, currently Van Dam and the English Georgia Hall and Charley Hull, will be joined by the top five eligible players in the world rankings and four picks made by Captain Catriona Matthew .

Van Dam plucked four shots in the last four holes to win, after he was put under pressure by defending champion Jiyai Shin, who eventually finished 13th as third.

"I hit a lot of golf balls over the past few months and with my coach Dave we have worked on my swing, so I'm very happy with it now," said Van Dam after winning her fourth Ladies European Tour title.

The Carly Booth from Scotland was fourth on 11, with the English Meghan Maclaren sixth on eight under.
