The Women's British Open will be held as planned, albeit without spectators, at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from 20 to August 23, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which conducts the tournament, said Tuesday. The event will be the first major women's golf championship in 2020. Last month, another major for women, the Evian Championship, which was scheduled for early August, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Martin Slumbers, the director of the R&A, called the Women's British Open "important to the success of women's professional golf." He added, "We believe that playing the AIG Women's British Open is an important step for players whose playing opportunities have been severely impacted this year. As they compete to become the 2020 champions in historic conditions, these athletes continue to inspire golfers and sports fans around the world who will closely follow Royal Troon's events on TV and social media. ”

Championship plans to restrict Royal Troon's field access to players , caddies, officials and staging personnel, and to implement strict health and safety guidelines on the golf course and at a designated hotel for the event All personnel present will have to test negative for the virus and their temperatures should be monitored daily.

Playing the Championship has yet to be approved by the local government and health authorities in the United States weeks prior to the event. Now that qualifying tournaments for the event have been canceled, the field for the Women's British Open will largely be pulled from the women's golf women's world rankings.

The Ladies Scottish Open is played the week before the Women's British Open at the Renaissance Club, also in Scotland. There will be no fans at that event.

The L.P.G.A. Tour has not held an event since the Women's Australian Open in February, but expects to resume the schedule on July 31 during the Drive On Championship in Toledo, Ohio. Professional golf for women still hopes to hold three major championships in 2020. The ANA Inspiration, usually the first female major of the year, has been postponed to September 10-13 in Rancho Mirage, California. Another major, the Women's P.G.A. Championship, was moved from October 8 to 11 in Newtown Square, Pa., And the Women's Open of the United States has been moved to December 10 to 13 in Houston.

After a five-month hiatus, the L.P.G.A. of Korea Tour resumed its schedule in May with a series of events featuring some of the world's top-ranked golfers, including No. 1 World Champion, Jin Young Ko.
