Tiger Woods came closer to a record win of the 82nd PGA Tour victory on Sunday after a three-shot lead over the weather-beaten Zozo championship in Japan.

The 15-time champion, who made his first appearance since knee surgery in August, expanded his lead over Hideki Matsuyama after the third round.

Woods finished in 16 under par.

Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland reached sixth after the third round, six shots at Woods.

He had a nightmare 72 on the first day, but a 65 on Saturday was followed by an excellent 63, equal to the low round of the week, including six birdies and an eagle on the 18th.

After the third round, all players immediately started their final rounds in a attempt to make up for lost time because Friday's game was postponed.

The game will be completed on Monday.

Round two had to be postponed until Saturday when six inches of rain fell, and the PGA said fans could not attend Saturday's play due to "safety concerns."

It is the first PGA tournament in Japan.
