Despite saying she has no leadership ambitions, Dame Laura Davies is named as vice-captain of the European team for the Solheim Cup next year at Gleneagles.

Skipper Catriona Matthew has appointed Davies, the continent's most successful Solheim player, to complete her back-room team for the match against the United States from 13-15 September.

Davies, who has always said she has no interest in a leader role, the main point shooter of the event is with 25 and has played in a record 12 events.

She will join Suzann Pettersen and Kathryn Imrie to support Captain Matthew if Europe wants to win back the trophy for the first time since 2013.

In anticipation of the season closing event of the Ladies European Tour, de AndalucĂa Costa del Sol Open the Espana, Matthew said that he was the most successful g olfer was an obvious choice.

"It was not a good idea," Matthew said. "I am very happy that Laura is standing next to me on the trip to Gleneagles, she is greatly respected by the players and has a great sense of humor, which will bring a little frivolity.

" Her experience speaks for itself : she played in 12 Solheim Cups, on both winning and losing teams, she has won 87 titles all over the world and has been the pivot of the Ladies European Tour for the last 30 years.

"The players who will be part of the team have so much respect for her that if one of them has to answer a question, they will listen to Laura."

Davies will join the former Solheim Cup teammate Suzann Petterson to complete the back room team of captain Catriona Matthew at Gleneagles

Davies' decision to accept the role is a surprise given that she always has elevations rejected to lead the European team.

"Solheim Cup players lose the ability to work one week every two years, and it would make me crazy to be asked to get bananas on the third green", Davies said last week August

"I could not handle it, I'm not interested, I do not want to do it", she added.

Davies now says that she is happy to have been given the role. "I am very happy and honored that Catriona is a vice captain for the first time," said Davies.

"She sent me an SMS when I commented on The Ryder Cup and I thought: 'Ah, I wonder what this is about to go on & # 39 ;.

" Yes, she asked me if I would do it and I did not even have to think about it. I want to be part of the team and I hope that I can make a positive contribution and help in every possible way. "
