Female players invited to Berkhamsted Trophy
Berkhamsted is famous on the amateur circuit because it is a bunker-free heath course
The Berkhamsted Trophy – one of the most important men's golf events for 60 years – invites female players to participate from 2020.
It will be the first time that a long-standing amateur event has removed a barrier for men only.
The next edition of the tournament on the heathland of West Hertfordshire will take place on April 2-4.
"We support initiatives such as these from Berkhamsted," said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A.
"The R & A & # 39; s Women in Golf Charter is a call to action for everyone involved in golf, from national associations to clubs, to attract more women and girls to this wonderful sport
"There are many different ways this can be achieved."
Invitations have been sent to a number of female top players to play in the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy, with access for golfers with handicaps of one or better.
Former world number one Luke Donald, lead champion Sandy Lyle and Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan all won the tournament before they achieved success as professionals.
The event is coming eligible for World Amateur Golf Ranking points for both men and women.
Nigel Edwards, England Golf Performance Director and Team GB leader at the 2020 Olympics, said: "If the board After the country has gone for male and female amateur golfers, we at England Golf are pleased to support the progressive initiative of Berkhamsted Golf Club in making the prestigious Berkhamsted Trophy a mixed genre event. "
Elaine Ratcliffe , captain of the Curtis Cup team for ladies amateurs 2020 in Great Britain and Ireland, added: "I welcome Berkhamsted for their progressive thought.
"I am delighted to be asked to help set up the wave and an equal test for both men and women during the event."
