Fraser raps to finally play Pebble
Marcus Fraser admits that Pebble Beach was on his bucket list, and the part-time touring professional from Melbourne is about to experience the dream at the US Open next week
Fraser made his way to his fourth US Open via qualifying at Walton Heath in England, an old favorite. But he was astonished that it had missed the "comfortable" cut in Belgium on the European Tour the week before.
"Given my current form, I didn't believe I had any hope," he told RSN's breakfast program from London today.
Fraser, who plays at the Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, came home from Europe at the end of last year to retire to Melbourne.
He said that this week his putter had "obscured all the flaws in my game" at Walton Heath.
"It's the one who saved my bitch a few times in my career and it definitely proved that yesterday," he said. "It was pretty hot."
Fraser joins Aaron Baddeley, Brett Drewitt, Matt Jones, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Cam Smith in an Australian contingent of eight men next week. He will probably have a good friend and golf-loving former AFL player Brendon Goddard on his bag next week at a location he has long admired from afar.
"I've been lucky enough to play the Open Championship in St. Andrews a few times," Fraser said. "I think playing the US Open on Pebble Beach gives it the same kind of ring. It's going to be pretty special."
