With the presidential Cup captains choices right on the line, Sebastian Munoz threw his hat in the ring in Colombia with a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson.
Meanwhile, South Korean Sungjae Im, who lost a play-off to Munoz, missed a great opportunity to secure his position in the Ernie Els international team for Royal Melbourne in December.
Munoz made a four-foot birdie-putt at the 72nd hole to enter the play-off with Im at 18-under par and then went up and down from the front edge for par at the first play-off hole to win .
Im, the rookie of the year 2019, beat long from left to left and went into the stands, and after a free fall he couldn't go up and down and lose bogey. He is still looking for his first win on the big tour, previously won twice on the old Web.com Tour.
The 21-year-old Im is perhaps Els' eye-catcher as one of the captain's four acquisitions, who will soon be named after having recorded seven top-10 finishes last season. But Munoz, 26, from Bogota, is a wildcard after having played the entire 2018-19 season on the US Tour with three top 10 finishes and now with his first win on the US Tour.
The choices of Els' four captains are still not entirely clear, although he recently said there were a number of obvious selections. One could be the Australian Jason Day, who has previously played the Presidential Cup and who was only one place outside of the qualifying group of eight. Another could be Im, along with Justin Harding from South Africa, while Joaquin Niemann from Chile, who recently won the Greenbrier event in the US, is considered a strong opportunity to play.
Cameron Percy from Australia finished eleventh in Jackson and shot 14-under to raise $ 150,000 for his good week. Cameron Davis finished in 28th place after a closing 69.
