Adam Scott has placed himself nicely in the race for the $ 15 million Fedex Cup bonus with a great finish at The Northern Trust in Liberty National today.
Scott made seven birdies in his last 65, the even-low round of the day, to finish fifth in the first playoff event of the US PGA Tour of the 2018-19 season.
After making birdie putts on the 16th and 17th today, he still had a good chance on the 18th to tie the lead at 14-under par. But it burned the gap and at least Patrick Reed and Abraham Ancer, the reigning Emirates Australian Open champion from Mexico, beyond that.
Ancer birdied the 17th to get a shot from the 2018 Masters champion Reed, but the American closed it with class, placed 16-under to win with one and reached second place on the Fedex Cup point table.
Scott is now 14th on the points table, which reached 21 in the week.
The top 70 will go to the BMW championship this week, followed by the Tour championship for the top 30 in Atlanta the following week.
Three Australians made the BMW – Scott, Marc Leishman (16th place) and Jason Day (50th), despite the fact that the last two missed the cut at Liberty National.
Three have ended their seasons. Cameron Smith (tied-59th) did not do enough and Matt Jones (tied-30th) and Aaron Baddeley did not withdraw due to a back injury.
