Adam Scott fought today for the $ 15 million Fedex Cup bonus in the first round of the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.
Scott started the day with three under par due to the new format of the PGA Tour for the closing tournament of the season, and shot a two under par 68 to finish 11th after the opening round.
The Australian is on five-under overall, five shots of the lead held by world number 1 Brooks Koepka and fellow Americans Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele on 10-under.
Scott had a mercurial day that started with a nice three-meter birdie putt that rattled the first. He made two double bogeys – one from the water at the par-four eighth and another from deep rough next to the par-three 11th hole – but also pumped into six birdies, ending with a nice four at the par-five 18th up close .
Scott won the Tour Championship in 2006 before being part of the Fedex Cup points race of the tour.
No Australian has won the Fedex Cup in its 12 years.
Marc Leishman, the other Australian who made the 30-man field in Atlanta, shot a one-over par 71 and is in 23rd place overall.
