Yonezawa closes tight win at SA Amateur Classic

Japan's amateur golfers continue their Australian love affair today, with Ren Yonezawa winning the South Australian Amateur Classic at Royal Adelaide.

A series of event winners from the 2018 Australian Amateur and a week camp in South Australia have given the Japanese contingent a sense of confidence in Australian conditions.

With consecutive leaders Billy Cawthorne and Yuta Sugiura with a single recording towards the final round, Yonezawa was accompanied halfway through an ensemble of contenders, including Jed Morgan from Queensland and Keith Nakajima, the Australian amateur champion of 2018.

Yonezawa, however, dug deeply with an eagle to break away from the pack at the 15th place of his success.

"Royal Adelaide is a fantastic golf course," said Yonezawa.

"I have been in Adelaide for two weeks, which is a great opportunity.

"This week tested my skills and the greens had great speed."

The victory is Yonezawa's first international victory after a 12th place at the end of last year in Adelaide.

"This has been my best achievement. I am very happy."

An impressive six-under-par 66 finish from Morgan assured the QAS team member straight away second.

Sugiura could not drop his early heroism with bogies on 10 and 11 to end in a triple draw for third place with South Australian state teammates Jack Thompson and Cawthorne.
