The American Matt Kuchar has achieved the perfect lead-in for the #AusOpenGolf by winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico.
Kuchar, who is one of the big players in the field for the legendary national championship, stuck to winning the US Tour event by a shot after leading most of the tournament in Playa del Carmen.
He will arrive tomorrow in Sydney in one of the best forms of a career with eight wins on the PGA Tour in the United States and a best world ranking of No. 4.
The 40-year-old Kuchar won with a shot and took a lead of four shots in the final round.
He was seriously challenged by New Zealander Danny Lee, who scored a 21-under par-total and waited until Kuchar, sitting on 22-under, would end.
At last a par needed for the profit, the American delivered properly. He had rounds of 64-65-65-69.
Anirban Lahiri from India, who is also on his way to The Lakes for the #AusOpenGolf, also played well, finishing in the top 10.
The defending # AusOpenGolf champion Cameron Davis finished in a shared 48th place. The 23-year old Sydneysider is also on his way to Sydney to defend the title he won on the Australian last year.
Many of the top players who contest the Open this week have arrived at The Lakes today and found it in perfect condition in perfect weather conditions.
There are qualifying tournaments at three locations in Sydney today for the last 10 spots in the field.
