Superstar Aussies coming to Sydney
Three of the biggest names in Australian golf will challenge the Emirates Australian Open 2019.
Fresh from the points of the FedEx Cup playoffs of the PGA Tour, Jason Day, Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith will each try to win their first Stonehaven Cup in Sydney from December 5-8.
"This is great news for golf enthusiasts across the country," said Stephen Pitt, CEO of Golf Australia.
"All three players are very popular with Aussie crowds and continue to achieve as much as they represent us on the PGA Tour and in events around the world.
"It is fantastic that they have committed to play in front of their own audience in what this year promises to be a very talented Australian Open.
"We are very excited about the field being assembled and will be announcing more big names in the coming weeks."
The Open returns to The Australian Golf Club for a 21st time – and the Aussie trio can't wait for their chance of history.
"It's the tournament where we all grew up and I said before that I want to win a few, so there's no better time to start than December," Day said.
"I almost got one at The Australian almost a few years ago and it is a course that works really well for me."
Leishman, who nearly won the World Cup for Australia with Smith last year, is always looking forward to playing for enthusiastic fans.
“It will be great if the general public supports us again. I know all the boys are dead and want to win the Aussie Open, so we are all pumped up to go back to Sydney. "
Smith, the dual and reigning Australian PGA champion, has become 10th, fourth and second in the last three years, so hell is keen to take the next step this year.
"I have been very close and it is something that I would like to win," said Smith.
"I know it's going to be a great field, plus it's a great rush for your home crowd."
Stuart Ayres, tourism minister in New South Wales, said the Open was the perfect event to show Sydney again as the home of some of the country's most prestigious sporting events.
"New South Wales plays host to some of Australia's most spectacular golf courses, so it goes without saying that our top talent is always passionate about our picturesque city," said Mr. Ayres.
“Major sporting events such as these play a major role in promoting tourism, the tourism of our state. With tickets on sale next week, I encourage everyone to get in early and plan their stay and look forward to seeing all fans appear in large numbers to welcome our players home. "
The Emirates Australian Open is supported by the NSW government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
The Emirates Australian Open is a flagship tournament on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia. The winner will receive a minimum of 32 official World Golf Ranking points.
