Windred one back in Vienna
Blake Windred
Blake Windred has taken a one-under-par 71 to follow his opening round 66 and only take a lead at the European Amateur Championship in Vienna, Austria.
The Harry Hall in England leads the event halfway from Windred, the Netherlands Jerry Ji, and another Englishman, Joseph Long.
Despite the heat wave conditions and the harder mid-afternoon of the draw, Windred remained cool and processed a methodical lap in which 15 pars and two birdies were seated around the Diamond Country Club course.
His first and only bogey for the week came in the par four eighth, in an otherwise almost flawless version.
"I made some good par saves today," Windred said afterwards. "I just want to keep rolling in those putts."
The Novocastrian, who led this tournament halfway through the tournament last year, said the key to victory was simply lower scores
"I just have to go outside to make birds, that's the secret."
Josh Greer from Western Australia is also rolling well, in a tie for the 10th after scoring an equal par 72. He is four behind and three below par for the tournament.
Day two was a struggle for the other Aussies. Jack Thomspon from South Australia is back 48th, while Chris Crabtree has a 70th draw and another two shots back.
Nathan Barbieri played a disappointing 79 to step out of the fight, while Jordie Garner and Josh Armstrong managed only 75 and 77.
Jed Morgan bounced back from an otherwise forgettable first round 79 to match that of Windred under par-round. He still has some work to do, sitting in a draw for 96th place.
The winner of the 2019 European Amateur will also win a place in the following month's Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
Round Three will start at 4 pm AEST.
